Day 08Yabuli Ski Resort

The Family Mountain

Yabuli's green and blue runs are genuinely good — wide, well-groomed, designed for the kind of skiing where a family of four can ski together without anyone being bored or overwhelmed. By day four, the children are on the chair lift unassisted, and the parents are experiencing something rare: skiing without managing anyone.

The mountain restaurant at mid-station serves dumplings. You eat them with your ski boots still on. The children think this is the most normal thing in the world.

The Hot Spring Evening

The outdoor hot spring sits at the edge of a birch forest. The temperature outside is minus eighteen. The water is forty degrees. You sit and watch steam rise into a clear sky and the children do not want to leave.

China's northeast winter has this quality: the cold makes everything warm feel extraordinary. The tea tastes better. The food after skiing tastes better. The hot spring is something else entirely — an argument, made in water and temperature, for being exactly here.

The Story They Will Tell

On the way to the airport, the children ask if they can come back. This question, asked in the back of a van at 6am in northeast China, is the answer to every logistical question you had before the trip.

You promise to think about it. You have already thought about it.
